What started off as a beautiful summer ride this afternoon ended in torrential downpours. Before the rain hit it was a beautiful ride along deserted Cheshire lanes, through Tatton Park, Middlewich, Northwich, Wilmslow and Styal. A recommended loop.

My longest ever single ride. All I need to do is to average those distances every day on the way to Paris in 4 weeks time.... Simple!.(?).

So it's with great excitement that the phenomenal organisation that is Hyper Island now has it's first UK school up and running in the basement of our Neighbourhood HQ in the NQ.

Their first 'cohort' of students (or Hypernauts) has enrolled this week onto the pilot course - you can read more on The Guardian blog.

105km in fact.... Chris and I upped the ante a little today with a beautiful ride through Cheshire to Jodrell Bank, a place that still holds a sense of wonderment and magic from my childhood. I'll never forget a school visit where we came away with some ticker tape from the radio telescope, convinced that we were holding a record of a conversation with aliens!

Not sure I'm going to be walking straight tomorrow.

Organised by the Mr Matt "how on earth does he fit all this stuff in" Booth with Northern Digitals, Jon and I were delighted to be invited to talk at the next in the series of BLAB talks, alongside one of our design heroes Airside.

Once we'd got over the "that sounds great" and the day crept ever closer, and the number of tweets and emails saying "can't wait for your talk" increased every day, so did the nerves....

And after turning up on the evening at the Deaf Institute to see the projector screen unexpectedly bathed in Mancunian sunlight (thanks, British Summer Time!) - we delayed our talk for another hour thus further (unwittingly!) increasing the anticipation.

Once on, we managed to relax a bit, and Jon and I took the audience through a quick journey through some of our personal creative history which has led us to this point with The Neighbourhood today (including a rare shot of me, aged 8, with my sisters hogging my ZX81!).....

Our talk concluded with an exclusive screening of our reservation experience for Heston Blumenthal's restaurant The Fat Duck, and thankfully our ambitious plan to give all 200+ people in the audience wireless headphones to immerse themselves in the binaural sound design (courtesy of Zelig Sound) - seemed to come off!

Out on my bike again this afternoon, I've been thinking for a while how there are so many pockets of Manchester which have been lying abandoned - since the credit crunch put a stop to all but the bravest and boldest property developers. Many buildings and sites have been standing in the same paralysed state for at least a year now, like monuments to an era of extravagance and limitless borrowing.

Could some of these concrete skeletons be put to innovative use, with Dickson Despommier's concept for 'vertical farms', or are they all destined to lie empty for a few years yet.?

So, back in September 2008 I was fortunate enough to be invited to the inaugural Do Lectures. It still remains one of the single most inspiring few days of my life. I met, discussed, debated, drank, and danced with an incredible array of inspiring attendees and speakers, in the beautiful setting of fforest.

In 2008, the Do Lectures were run as kind of a pilot, organised by David Hieatt, one of the founders of Howies as part of their Earth Tax. They've gained momentum and have now become an annual event.

Here's a video of the 2008 talks, for which the film-makers thankfully elected not to use my on-camera metaphor of "it's been like an intravenous injection of good" in their final cut. (Although I very much stand by those words!)

Reaching millions through the podcasts created at the event, they are surely creating a huge impact.

And now, all their talks from the last three years are on the newly designed Do Lectures site - so go there and pick up some good.
